SilverPlatter from ALA

Feel free to share with others. These are the notes I took from an update
meeting and visits to the SilverPlatter booth at Midwinter.

--------------------------
SilverPlatter update
1/30
Y2K status is on SilverPlatter web page. Process is almost done.

Coming Products:
International Books in Print from K.G.Saur (note: I went to both
K.G. Saur and Bowker booths later to get more info on this. K.G Saur said
Bowker is handling it for them. Bowker gentleman in booth didn't know
about it, and it wasn't yet listed in their catalog as a product. However
- International Books in Print is only the *non-U.S.* part of Global Books
in Print in their CD versions.) --at SP booth later, I asked for earliest
info on pricing and availability.
Philosopher's Index -- This should be coming in June. Tip from
our Sales Rep is that it will no longer be available on Dialog. (OVID is
also investigating.)
Some new allied and Alternative Medicine file.
ATLA Religion Index now available as either 1949- present or as a
rolling 10 years.

SilverPlatter then proceeded to talk about a lot of new things, most of
which are *not* available for Web only customers. Webadmin with much
better statistics and extraction capabilities will likely only be for
local ERL servers.

For products that we only subscribe to a limited number of simultaneous
users, there is the option of accessing a training server (with 30 users)
and info on this may be on the SP web-site. If not, our rep will send me
info about how to arrange to access the training server.

SilverLinker database to enable direct links from citations in many files
to fulltext journal articles by a growing number of publishers and the
swetsnet gateway is now available for local server customers. Projections
for availability to internet-only customers is late 1999. Price is
currently $1,000 - possibility that will go up in March.

We could (if we chose to) right now use the "doc delivery" function to
have citations sent directly via email to an ILL office for processing.
Drawback for Yale is that this cannot be tailored by database. All
citations from all files would need to go to a single ILL office email
address.

SilverPlatter: Philospher's Index coming June. They will send pricing and
availability for that file and International Books in Print Plus as soon
as known. For Jocelyn, got pricing on "Polling the Nations" (1 SU = $750
; 2-4 SUs = $900) license is the same as for other SP products. They will
set up an IP trial for us hopefully beginning this week.
